SAM CONCEPCION: role model for today's youth

During the birthday press con of Star Magic artists recently, October birthday celebrant Sam Concepcion revealed that the only thing he bought for himself was a pair of rubber shoes which he loves to collect. But other than that, he refused to take any gifts from his parents who kept on asking him what he wants for his birthday last October 17. “It’s not that I have everything. I definitely do not have everything but I just don’t really want anything na material. Hindi ko alam. I wish that I have something in mind na hingin pero wala e,” said Sam who also shared that he never had been the “bilmoko” (bili mo ko no’n, bili mo ko n’yan) type of kid.

As a matter of fact, he didn’t have time to celebrate it on the day itself because he was busy with his out of town gigs during that week. But still, there were people who went out of their way to plan a surprise birthday party for him. “Pinaka-celebration ko na yung sa ASAP. And then there was this booking that I went to two days after. But it turned out that the people in Cagayan Valley threw a celebration for me. So I had no idea. October is children’s month and they got me there to speak for the high school students, tapos meron lang show. Pero yun pala it was a birthday present to me. May mga games pa like Sam look-alike contest. It was so entertaining. It’s one experience I won’t ever forget,” he fondly recalled.

As the youth spokesperson of Department of Education and World Vision, Sam had also participated in various outreach activities for the victims of the typhoon. But aside from distributing relief goods, the 17-year-old singer/actor also took time to entertain the kids in the areas where he visited. “When World Vision went to Marikina, we had this child-friendly area. We gathered all the children ten to twelve years old and even the small ones. Interaction lang para ma-encourage sila. It was important kasi they were the ones who were really traumatized by what happened. So we asked them to write prayers and what they want in a piece of paper. Surprisingly, very small things lang yung hinihingi nila, like papag lang or I want my bag back, things like that,” he related.

Sam is also getting ready for the Star Magic World Concert Tour at the Araneta Coliseum on November 13. When asked how he feels that he would be a part of something this big in order to help his fellow countrymen, he proudly replied, “It’s really a big privilege for artists like us to be part of this outreach activities kasi ito talaga yung time na we can help other people first hand. We know that we’re doing something not just for ourselves. At a time like this, all the artists are looking at one direction, we have one goal. That alone inspires to really make the show a huge success.”
